Geodon (Ziprasidone) is an antipsychotic pharmaceutical that works by altering the effects of chemicals in the brain. Geodon is used to treat schizophrenia and manic symptoms of bipolar disorder (manic depression) in adults and children who are at least 10 years old.

Geodon safety information

The drug has a number of contraindications, which must be read before making a decision on taking the medicine.

Geodon cannot be given to people with an allergy to Ziprasidone.

People who have a heart rhythm disorder and uncontrolled heart failure cannot use Geodon. Also, it cannot be taken if the person has had a heart attack or suffered prolonged Long QT syndrome (also relates to heart rhythm disturbances, which is dangerous for health and life). Patients who have had cases of prolonged Long QT syndrome in the family should also not receive Geodon therapy.

Certain medications cannot be taken simultaneously with Geodon since their interaction with Geodon can lead to serious consequences. Your therapist will tell you about the list of these drugs, you have to tell about all the pharmaceutical products that you are taking at the moment.

The drug is contraindicated in persons who are demented. Elderly people who have diseases associated with dementia must refuse to take the drug, as this is very dangerous for their life.

Also, you must tell your doctor if you have tolerated this condition:

• Heart disease;
• Diseases of bone marrow or blood cells;
• Breast cancer;
• Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood;
• Diabetes (Geodon may increase blood sugar levels);
• Seizures or epilepsy;
• Thoughts of suicide;
• Alzheimer's disease;
• Swallowing problems;
• Kidney liver disease.

If you feel strong pain in the chest cavity, arrhythmia or a strong heartbeat, as well as dizziness, you need to stop taking Geodon and urgently seek help from your therapist.

In rare cases, Geodon can cause a serious skin reaction, which can be fatal if it spreads to other parts of the body. Stop using this medical product and call your doctor right away if you have a new or worsening skin rash with fever or swollen glands.

Your therapist should be aware of the presence of pregnancy or your plans to become pregnant.

Receiving Geodon in the last trimester of pregnancy can cause complications in newborns, such as malfunctions in the respiratory system, feeding problems, muscle tremors, and panic. If you become pregnant while taking the medicine, do not cancel therapy without your doctor's prescription.

Geodon is not recommended for persons under 18 years old.

It is worth noting that during therapy Geodon increases the sensitivity of the body to cold and heat. Therefore, avoid too cold, hot temperatures and arid areas.

In addition, you should drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Geodon influences the reaction, so you have to refrain from driving the car and do not get up drastically from sitting or lying down. It can cause dizziness or fainting.

In order to avoid complications, do not drink alcohol during therapy.

Geodon side effects

The drug can cause allergic reactions, cough, stomach pain, yellowing of the eyes and skin, changes in heart rate, uncontrolled muscle movements, swelling, and fever. In such cases, stop taking Geodon and seek medical help.

The general side conditions of Geodon can be ranked as fever, fatigue, thoughts of suicide, depressive states.

In most cases, side effects occur after improper intaking of medication or other diseases, so follow all of the above instructions.
