Drug uses

Aldactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic, used to treat the following conditions:

• malignant ascites
• nephrotic syndrome
• primary aldosteronism
• congestive cardiac failure
• hepatic cirrhosis with ascites and oedema

Aldactone has a strong diuretic effect. Aldactone advantage is that it increases the excretion of sodium ions, at the same time reducing the loss of potassium ions in the renal tubules.

Aldactone is recommended for use in adults and adolescents. There are limited data on the use of diuretic drug in pediatric patients. Therefore, Aldactone should be used in children under the pediatric specialist supervision.

The initial daily dosage of Aldactone for the edema treatment in children ranges from 1 to 3 mg per body weight kilogram of the child. The daily dose of the diuretic Aldactone for adults ranges from 25 mg to 200 mg.

Regardless of the patient age, the daily dose of Aldactone should be divided into several portions. The daily dose and frequency of Aldactone intake may require adjustment in the long-term diuretic therapy.

Missed dose

If the patient missed a therapeutic dose of Aldactone, he or she should take it as soon as remembers. If little time is left before the next dose intake, the patient should return to the normal dosing regime, without taking a double Aldactone dose.

More information

The patients, going through the diuretic therapy, are advised to avoid foods, rich in potassium, and to have periodical check-ups of kidney function. Consumption of alcoholic beverages is not recommended in Aldactone use.

Aldactone may cause dizziness and drowsiness in some patients, so people, going through this treatment, are recommended to be cautious while driving and operating machinery.

Important: Aldactone can distort tests results at determination of Digoxin plasma concentration.

Storage

Aldactone diuretic should be stored at temperature below 30°C, in dry place, in its original packaging (plastic bottles, glass bottles, blister packs).

Warnings

Aldactone may increase effects of other diuretics. Therefore, the addition of Aldactone into the combined drug therapy may require the daily doses adjustment of all used diuretics and antihypertensive drugs.

Such non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, as Indomethacin and Aspirin weaken the diuretic effect of Aldactone. Coadministration of Aldactone with other potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium-containing supplements and ACE inhibitors may cause severe hyperkalemia.

Aldactone can reduce the vascular responsiveness to norepinephrine. Therefore, the patients taking Aldactone should be particularly careful when going through regional or general anesthesia. Simultaneous use of Aldactone with anticoagulants can reduce the antithrombotic effect of anticoagulants.

Aldactone side effects

Reversible increase in mammary glands is possible in men and women, going through the treatment with high doses of Aldactone, or prolonged diuretic therapy. This undesirable effect disappears after the end of an intensive, long-term diuretic therapy.

Aldactone tablets may sometimes cause gastrointestinal adverse reactions, including nausea, diarrhea or vomiting. Less commonly, Aldactone causes: drowsiness, dysphonia, dyspnea, excessive hair growth, alopecia, hair thinning, fever, feeling unwell, sore throat, headache, mental confusion, ulceration, gastritis, gastric bleeding, allergic reactions (skin rash, itchiness, urticaria, skin redness, peeling skin).

Aldactone does not cause serious adverse reactions in the majority of patients with cardiovascular risk factors, liver diseases, and edema of various origins. Cases of Aldactone cancellation due to the unwanted effects are very rare.
