Drug uses

Antiplatelet agent Aggrenox is indicated for prophylaxis of acute stroke to patients already experienced mini-stroke or stroke. The drug prevents platelets clump together and enhances a vasodilating effect of the endogenous nucleoside adenosine.

The drug should be prescribed to adult patients (aged over 16 years), except for cases of Kawasaki disease in infancy and childhood. Aggrenox is not usually recommended to pregnant and breastfeeding women unless absolutely necessary.

To protect tiny blood vessels in the brain, it is advised to use two Aggrenox pills a day orally. The drug should be taken with or without food at regular intervals. Sometimes a vasodilating effect of Aggrenox causes side effects (for example, headaches). Temporary reduction in dosage to one pill a day usually easily alleviates headache.

Missed dose

A missed dose is defined as one that is more than 8-12 hours late. Having missed to take one or more pills, the regular dosing schedule should be followed. Do not take two pills too close together.

Aggrenox is a combined drug, sustained-release, containing two active anti-platelet agents. Both active ingredients are slowly released in the stomach, immediately absorbed into the blood, and within 20-40 minutes dissociated into metabolites. The short half-life reduces the risk of adverse effects.

Storage

Keep anti-platelet agent Aggrenox at 25°C. Storage between 15° to 30°C is allowed.

Warnings

Aggrenox prevents blood clots, however, this pharmacodynamic property slows down wound healing, and this could lead to an increased bleeding tendency (including gastrointestinal). During use of Aggrenox pills, the consumption of anti-platelet agents and alcohol is recommended to be minimized. Aggrenox pills contain aspirin, which is advised to be taken with caution for people with intestinal mucosal break. Such medical conditions require the digestive tract to be regularly observed.

Aggrenox Side effects

All undesirable effects of Aggrenox do not cause serious harm to the patient’s health. Aggrenox investigations enrolled patients with a history of ischemic stroke. The most common undesirable effects were reported as fatigue, back pain, headache, convulsions, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea.

Just 1% of patients in clinical trials are reported to complain of such undesirable effects as taste loss, allergic reaction, fever, hypotension, flushing, gastritis, tachycardia, and asthma. However, all of them were mild and transient.

Post-marketing experience revealed that chest pain, angina pectoris, dizziness, headache, pancreatitis, vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, anorexia, hypersensitivity, hematoma, and hot flush were reported to be observed in some patients used the antiplatelet agent migraine.
